Volunteer With Us

Rag & Bones is operated by a collective of volunteers and an army of friends who help out on a walk-in basis. We currently have a drop in volunteer night where you can meet us, get introduced to the space, and get experience working on bikes for our shop and programs.

Drop in nights are on the first Thursday of every month, from 6-8PM. If you have questions call us or email the shop at info@ragandbonesrva.org.

Coming to our drop in night is the first step to volunteering long term, so start here!

If you come to a number of volunteer nights and want to do more, we’re happy to talk to you about the collective and what goes into running the place. If you have a special skill or want to help with a certain project, you can fill out the form at the bottom of the page and we’ll get back to you when we can. The best way to catch us or talk about collaborating is just to come in and say hi.

We periodically schedule new volunteer orientations and volunteer mechanics training workshops. Everyone who volunteers will be trained first in the host role.

Volunteer roles:

Bike Mechanic: In this role you help run the DIY bike shop space. This means learning mechanical skills, helping us build affordable bikes, talking to community members seeking knowledge and repairs, working one-on-one to teach repair. There are lead mechanics, who are responsible for opening/closing the shop with attendant opening/closing duties, and supporting mechanics.

Host: In this role you help with greeting folks as they come into the shop, signing them in and explaining how the shop works, taking in and sorting donations, carrying out sales at the register, and assisting with paperwork for our free bike programs. You will be able to sell new bike products and complete bikes.

Events Crew: In this role you help organize and run weekend/evening events and more. You can help with booking, running door during an event, talking to folks about the space, or just generally helping out on crew. If you just want to host community events, you don’t necessarily need to help with shop open hours or hosting.

All regular volunteers are expected to come to monthly co-op meetings.

NO experience is necessary, just an interest in bikes, art, collective work and community health. If you have other skills that don’t fit the roles above, please note them in the form. If you have any questions reach out to info@ragandbonesrva.org
