For the last four summers, Rag & Bones has partnered with Groundwork RVA and their Bellemeade Community Bike Shop to provide a free weeklong summer camp for girls and gender variant youth.
In 2021 Camp Spokes ran for one week in partnership with A Better Day Than Yesterday. In 2022 the camp was divided into a one week for high schoolers and one week for middle schoolers, in partnership with Communities in Schools. Two high schoolers were invited back to be paid junior counselors through Groundwork RVA. In 2023, we added an Adventure Overnight experience! In 2024, we took some of our Youth Leaders to the Youth Bike Summit in Allentown, Pennsylvania.
The camp is also volunteer run, and taught by women and trans cyclists, mechanics, organizers, educators and community members in Richmond. Camp Spokes focuses on teaching campers about bike maintenance and repair, arts and crafts like screen-printing, gardening and building with power tools, and exposes campers to riding in the urban environment of Richmond as well as on mountain bike trails. The camp ends with a day of trail riding at Pocahontas State Park, and each camper takes home a FREE bike that they have worked on themselves.
